What is a love polygon? (And how to draw yours)

One heart for every love

Think of every place where you fell for someone: the bar of a first date, the beach of a summer fling, the city of a long relationship. Put a heart on each one. Now draw a line around the outermost hearts, like a rubber band around pins on a board. That shape is your love polygon.

Why a polygon?

Mathematicians call that rubber-band shape a convex hull: the smallest convex shape that contains every point. It is a fun, honest way to show how far your heart has travelled. Two loves in the same town make a tiny polygon; a crush in Lisbon and another in Berlin stretch it across a continent.

What the area means

Bizarre Love Polygon measures the area on the curved surface of the Earth and compares it with things you know, from football pitches to whole countries. "1.5 × France" sounds a lot more fun than 800,000 km². It also counts the countries your polygon touches, your average time together and the farthest two loves apart.

Draw yours in a minute

  1. Open the app (no account needed).
  2. Tap +, give the person a nickname and an emoji, and drop a heart where it happened.
  3. Add the month and year; the day is optional.
  4. Repeat. Your polygon grows with every new city.
